Artificial Kidney Dialysis & Kidney Transplantation Unit

About 30% of critically ill patients develop renal failure of various severities. The Department of Nephrology at MCRI specializes in all aspects of Nephrology such as renal biopsies, renal angiography and angioplasty, haemodialysis.

The Department of Nephrology is equipped with a state-of-the-art haemodialysis and post-transplantation unit. It also houses a smooth running CAPD program. Facilities include a dedicated twin OT with Laminar Air flow specially designed for Organ Transplant, isolated and specially designed areas with all facilities for strict aseptic precautions for Post Transplant Recovery and a state-of-the-art Dialysis unit.

Kidney Transplant Unit

This specially designed unit at MCRI aims to fufil the health requirements of the patients and their families. The transplant is carried out with complete documentation and interrogation of both the recipient and donor to maintain transparency and accuracy.

The multidisciplinary transplant team comprises of a skilled and experienced team of Nephrologists, Urologists and Anesthetists working in coordination, to provide quality care to the patients with expert medical and paramedical assistance.

Facilities

  • A social worker to counsel the patient and other multidisciplinary support staff that include a dietician, pharmacist and physiotherapist are constantly available
  • For Outpatient Care, weekly pre and postoperative kidney transplant patient clinics are held for managing the patient before planning for transplant

Dialysis Unit

At MCRI we conduct number of dialysis procedures every month. State-of-the-art Dialysis unit is open 24-hours. Nephrologists are available round the clock on call, to attend to the patients in event of any emergency. Qualified and well-trained nurses and dialysis technicians perform the dialysis on the patients.

The Nephrology department also provides

  • Dialysis services for patients in the ICU, dialysis patients undergoing cardiac or orthopedic procedures.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of primary kidney diseases by assessment.
  • Renal biopsy is done using ultra sound guidance.
  • Outpatient consultancy services are available.
  • Consultancy for general nephrology care for diabetic, hypertensive and patient with immune kidney diseases is done.
  • Pre dialysis and pre transplant care is also co-ordinate

The dialysis unit also provides aprivate room for patients who want to get dialyzed in private.

Procedures

The unit performs AV Fistula, AV Grafts, Perm catheter, temporary femoral (or) subclavion or Jugular access and percutaneous catheter insertion for CAPD for patients requiring various mode of dialysis. The Department houses a dedicated Nephrology ICU for patients who are critical ill with kidney disease.

Kidney Transplants

The Department of Nephrology has the expertise to provide the best Kidney Transplant programme. The unit has experience in handling transplants and problems arising from them, for over many decades. The success rate of a transplant here is comparable to the best in the world today.
